The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Aparokṣānubhūtiḥ

Verse 79

अलातं भ्रमणेनैव वर्तुलं भाति सूर्यवत् ।तद्वदात्मनि देहत्वं पश्यत्यज्ञानयोगतः ॥ ७९ ॥

In plain words

Spin a burning stick fast enough and it looks like a perfect circle of fire, a little sun. That circle isn't real — it's only motion tricking the eye. In exactly that way, ignorance makes you see a body where there is only Self.

Close to the Sanskrit

A firebrand, merely through whirling, shines circular, like the sun; likewise [one] perceives body-hood in the Self owing to the conjunction of ignorance.
