नानोपाधिवशादेव जातिवर्णाश्रमादयः ।आत्मन्यारोपितास्तोये रसवर्णादि भेदवत् ॥ ११ ॥

Caste, class, the stage of life you are in, and every other label of that kind — they are there only because of the various upādhis, the coverings you happen to be wearing. They are laid over the ātman, not found in it. Water picks up a taste and a tint from whatever it runs through: sweet here, brackish there, brown in one place and clear in another. Every one of those differences is borrowed.

Only by force of the manifold limiting adjuncts are caste, class, stage of life and the rest superimposed upon the Self — like the differences of taste, colour and the rest in water.
