रज्ज्वज्ञानाद्भाति रज्जौ यथाहिःस्वात्माज्ञानादात्मनो जीवभावः ।आप्तोक्त्याऽहिभ्रान्तिनाशे स रज्जुर्जीवो नाहं देशिकोक्त्या शिवोऽहम् ॥ २ ॥
In plain words
Not knowing the rope, you see a snake lying on the rope. Not knowing your own Self, you see a separate soul where the Self is. One word from someone who knows, the snake-delusion breaks, and it is rope. One word from my teacher: I am not the jīva. I am Śiva.
Close to the Sanskrit
As, from ignorance of the rope, a snake appears on the rope, so, from ignorance of one's own Self, the state of being a jīva appears of the Self. When, by the word of a trustworthy person, the delusion of the snake is destroyed, that is a rope; I am not a jīva — by the word of the teacher, I am Śiva.
