The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Bṛhadāraṇyakopaniṣadbhāṣyam

Verse 129

श्रोत्रं वै ग्रहः स शब्देनातिग्राहेणगृहीतः श्रोत्रेण हि शब्दाञ्शृणोति ॥ ६ ॥

In plain words

The ear is a grasper — seized by sound itself, its own over-grasper. Because it is through the ear that we hear.

Close to the Sanskrit

The ear, indeed, is a grasper; it is seized by sound as the over-grasper; for by the ear one hears sounds.
