The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Bṛhadāraṇyakopaniṣadbhāṣyam

Verse 178

संवत्सरस्यैत आदित्या एते हीद५ सर्व-माददाना यन्ति ते यदिद५ सर्वमाददानायन्ति तस्मादादित्या इति ॥ ५ ॥

In plain words

These twelve are the Ādityas of the year. They move on and on, and as they move they take everything with them — every lifespan, every fruit of action. Because they take up everything as they go, they are called Ādityas, ‘the takers.’

Close to the Sanskrit

These are the Ādityas of the year. For these, taking up all this, go on. Since they, taking up all this, go on, therefore [they are] Ādityas.
