In plain words

Yājñavalkya said: 'Everything is dear — but listen: brahman doesn't become dear for brahman's own sake, it becomes dear for the sake of the Self. The ruling power doesn't become dear for its own sake, but for the sake of the Self. The worlds, the gods, the Vedas, every being, everything there is — none of it is dear for its own sake. It's all dear only because the Self is dear. So it is the Self, Maitreyī, that must be seen, heard, reflected on, meditated on. Once the Self is seen, heard, reflected on, known — everything is known.'

He, Yājñavalkya, said: 'Dear indeed, surely — O one, it is for the sake of brahman that brahman becomes dear; but it is for the sake of the Self that brahman becomes dear. It is not for the sake of the kṣatra that the kṣatra becomes dear, but for the sake of the Self that the kṣatra becomes dear. It is not for the sake of the worlds that the worlds become dear, but for the sake of the Self that the worlds become dear. It is not for the sake of the gods that the gods become dear, but for the sake of the Self that the gods become dear. It is not for the sake of the Vedas that the Vedas become dear, but for the sake of the Self that the Vedas become dear. It is not for the sake of beings that beings become dear, but for the sake of the Self that beings become dear. It is not for the sake of all that all becomes dear, but for the sake of the Self that all becomes dear. The Self, indeed, O one, is to be seen, to be heard, to be reflected upon, to be meditated upon, Maitreyī — when the Self, indeed, O one, is seen, heard, reflected upon, known, all this is known.'
