In plain words
Having looked into a water-filled bowl, Prajāpati asked them about what they failed to fully understand. True to his word, they gazed directly into the water. When Prajāpati asked 'What do you see?', they did not report any failure of understanding, nor did they confess that it remained unknown to them. Why? Because no such doubt had even crossed their minds; their conviction that the shadow was indeed the self was entirely fixed. As the text later confirms, they departed with peaceful hearts—and such tranquility is impossible when one's understanding is unsettled. Because they held a perverse grasp and could not simply be ignored, the teacher himself asked what they saw. To dispel their false certainty, he would go on to instruct them to adorn themselves well. They answered: 'We see the self completely, O Venerable One, right down from the hairs to the nails, as an exact reflection. Just as we possess hair and nails, so too do we see our counterpart in the water-bowl.'
Close to the Sanskrit
In the water-filled bowl, having observed the self, subsequently what you two do not understand there, speak that forth to me, declare it to me—thus spoken to, those two indeed looked into the water-bowl in that very way, performed the observation. Having done thus, Prajāpati spoke to them—what do you see? इति. Now, having been told 'speak that to me,' having performed the observation in the water-bowl, it was not reported to Prajāpati—'this is not known by us two,' and when the cause of ignorance remained unreported, Prajāpati indeed spoke—what do you see? Here what is the intention? It is said: there was no such doubt for the two of them 'this is unknown to us two,' the notion of the self in the shadow-self was certain indeed. By which he will say 'those two departed with peaceful hearts' इति. For in the case of an unsettled intended meaning, peacefulness of heart is not appropriate. Therefore they did not state 'this is unknown to us two.' And because the two pupils who grasped things perversely were not to be ignored, of his own accord he asked—what do you see? And for the removal of the false certainty he will say 'well-adorned' and so on. Those two indeed spoke—we two see this entire self, O venerable one, as a counterpart right up to the hairs, right up to the nails; just as we two, O venerable one, are possessed of hair and nails, even so we see this counterpart of us two, equipped with hair and nails, in the water-bowl.
