आदावादिपितामहस्य नियमव्यापारपात्रे जलंपश्चात्पन्नगशायिनो भगवतः पादोदकं पावनम् ।भूयः शम्भुजटाविभूषणमणिर्जह्नोर्महर्षेरियंकन्या कल्मषनाशिनी भगवती भागीरथी पातु माम् ॥
In plain words
First she was only water, held in the pot Brahmā kept for his daily rites. Then she was the water poured over the feet of the Lord who sleeps on the serpent — water that purifies whatever it touches. Then she was the jewel set in Śambhu's tangled hair. And now she is this one: daughter of the great sage Jahnu, destroyer of every stain. May the divine Bhāgīrathī protect me.
