In plain words
The eye takes in a shape only when the sun has lit it; unlit, it takes in nothing. And the sun stands exactly where the eye stood — lit by something else, it lights the eye. That by whose light the sun shines, whose whole nature is awareness and never goes out: that is the ātman, and that is what I am.
Close to the Sanskrit
Just as the eye, illumined by the sun, grasps form, and not when it is unillumined — thus too the sun: the One, illumined by which [Self], illumines the eye. That Self, whose very nature is eternal awareness, am I.
