In plain words
If you do come by more than enough, it turns into your wife's money and the family's money, not yours. And between the king and the thief, what is left is loss. So the whole push for wealth is wasted effort.
Close to the Sanskrit
If surplus wealth is obtained, it becomes the own-property of the wife and the rest; and from king and thief too there is loss. Therefore effort for wealth is futile.
