। ॥ ८४ ॥
In plain words
Money that slips from the knot of your clothing and is gone through pure carelessness — that leaves you grieving. The same money, placed in the hands of someone who knows the scriptures, brings you gladness, and brings you something better than gladness. Sense-objects work the same way. Let them walk off on their own and the grief lasts and lasts. Give them away yourself, freely, and they hold out the highest good — and that good is made of joy.
Close to the Sanskrit
If money, slipped from the fold of the garment, should somewhere be lost through carelessness, then it is for grief; but that same money, offered to one learned in scripture, is for joy and for the higher good. So too, if these sense-objects depart of their own accord, they will long be for grief; but if they are wholly given up by oneself, they hold out the highest good, which is made of joy.
