यस्माद्धर्मान् अग्निहोत्रादीन् आचरन्ति इह लोके केचित् ।तथा अधर्मानिहाचरन्ति ।किं तेषां धर्मः पापेन प्रतिहन्यते वा ? उताहो स्वित् धर्मः प्रतिहन्ति पापम् ? अथवा तुल्यबलत्वेनान्यतरेण अन्यतरस्यापि नाशः ? इति ॥
In plain words
Some people in this world do what is right — they keep the agnihotra and the rites that go with it. And in that same life, they also do what is wrong. So which way does it go? Is their merit struck down by their sin? Or does the merit strike down the sin? Or are the two evenly matched, so that each cancels the other out? That is the question.
Close to the Sanskrit
Since some in this world perform dharmas beginning with the agnihotra, and likewise perform adharmas here as well — is it that their dharma is struck down by sin? Or rather, does dharma strike down sin? Or else, both being of equal force, is there destruction of one of the two by the other? Thus the question stands.
