In plain words

Wealth is the peg that fear is tied to. It feeds a sorrow that never lets up. It tears at you savagely. It swells the crowd of relatives who appear out of nowhere. It blocks every fine quality from growing, and it waits on a tight-fisted mind hand and foot. It is no means to reaching mukti — and it does not so much as clean out the heart.

Close to the Sanskrit

Wealth is the tether of fear, the nourisher of unceasing sorrow, a most violent tearing, the multiplier of kinsmen sprung suddenly forth, the obstructor of excellent virtues, the courting of a miserly mind; it is not a means to the attaining of liberation, nor even a cleansing of the heart.
