In plain words
How could we describe your hands, O Umā? The brilliance of their nails laughs at the fresh red lotus. A lotus might resemble them in some small measure if Lakṣmī, at play, stained it with lac from the soles of her feet.
Close to the Sanskrit
O Umā, tell us: how can we describe the radiance of your hands, whose shining nails mock the redness of fresh lotuses? Alas, a lotus might attain even a fraction of that likeness if it became skilled in the lac-dye from the soles of Lakṣmī's feet as she plays.
