In plain words
I know nothing of the law books, nothing of the sciences, nothing of medicine; not augury, not poetry, not music, not fine speech; not the Purāṇas, not the mantras; I cannot flatter, cannot dance, cannot make anyone laugh. So how would any king ever take a liking to me? Who am I at all, Paśupati? I am one of your animals — tend me out of sheer compassion, you who know everything, you whose name has gone everywhere, boundless Lord.

In smṛti, in śāstra, in medicine, in augury, poetry, song and eloquence, in Purāṇa, or in mantra, in praise, dance and jesting — unskilled: how does the favour of kings come to be toward me? Who am I, O Lord of animals? Me, an animal — O all-knowing one, O renowned one — protect me by compassion, O all-pervading Lord.
