In plain words
Day after day I tramp around just to fill my own stomach, sizing up everyone I meet for what I might get out of them — pointless circuits, and I never learnt how to serve you, O Lord who fills everything. But some merit from an earlier birth has ripened, and it has this much force: you, Śarva, stand as the inmost of all, inside everyone. So on that ground alone, Paśupati — I am yours to protect.
Close to the Sanskrit
Constantly, for the filling of my own belly, aiming at everyone with the hope of wealth, I make fruitless wandering; I do not know service of you, O Vibhu. By the force of the ripening of merit from another birth of mine, you, O Śarva, stand indeed as the inmost of all; by that, then, O Paśupati, I am one to be protected by you.
