The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Svātmaprakāśikā

Verse 58

In plain words

Throw water at space: it does not get wet, and it does not get clean. So too with this Self — the Ganges cannot purify it, because it was never anything but pure.

Close to the Sanskrit

By drops of water space is not wetted, nor does it become pure; likewise, by the water of the Gaṅgā this one is not purified — because of being eternally pure.
