। ॥ ४० ॥
In plain words
With the teeth of the comb I work slowly through the glossy weight of her hair; I draw the parting clean and straight and lay a line of vermilion down it. Pearls strung through the locks, gold cords bright with gems so the whole thing shows against the dark, and at the very tip a slim tassel of pearls hanging like a little vine — this is the braid I am plaiting.
Close to the Sanskrit
Having gently combed out with the teeth of the comb the glossy mass of hair, having beautifully fashioned the parting, spotless and accompanied by a line of vermilion — its locks strung with pearls, distinctly worked with gem-studded golden threads, bearing at its end a slender creeper-like tassel of pearls — I plait this braid.
