Verse 157

इति मानवं वचनम् ।जपस्तु सर्वधर्मेभ्यः परमो धर्म उच्यते ।अहिंसया च भूतानां जपयज्ञः प्रवर्तते ॥इति ।'यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि ।' इति श्रीगीतासु ।'अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा ।यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः' इत्यादि ।यदेकं दैवतं प्रस्तुतं तस्योपलक्षणम् उच्यते—

So runs Manu's word. Of all the dharmas, japa is called the highest — and the japa-sacrifice goes forward without injuring a single living thing. 'Among sacrifices, I am the sacrifice of japa,' says the Gītā. And: 'Impure or pure, in whatever state he has fallen into — whoever remembers the Lotus-Eyed One is clean, outside and in.' There are many more passages of that kind. Now the mark by which that one deity, already brought forward, is to be known:

Thus the statement of Manu. But japa, among all dharmas, is said to be the highest dharma. And by non-injury to beings the japa-sacrifice proceeds — thus. 'Of sacrifices, I am the japa-sacrifice' — thus in the holy Gītā. 'Impure, or pure, or even gone into any condition whatever — he who should remember the Lotus-Eyed One, he is pure outwardly and inwardly' — and so forth. Of that one deity which has been brought forward, the indicative mark is now stated—
