The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Viṣṇusahasranāmastotram

Verse 195

साम चोपप्रदानं च भेददण्डौ तथापरौ ।उपायाः कथिता ह्येते मित्रादीनां च साधने ॥

In plain words

Kind words and gifts; and then the other two, division and force. These four, we are told, are the means when it comes to winning allies and everything of that kind.

Close to the Sanskrit

Conciliation and gift-giving, and likewise the other two, division and force — these indeed have been declared the expedients in the securing of allies and the rest.
