Paragraph 5

Paragraph 5

In plain words

Whatever it is that rises up in this body calling itself "I" — that is the mind. Ask where, in the body, the thought "I" first rises, and you will find it is in the Heart. That is where the mind is born. Even if you do nothing but keep thinking "I, I", it will lead you back and set you down in that very place. Of every thought that ever rises in the mind, the thought "I" is the very first. Only once it has risen do all the other thoughts follow. Only once the first person appears do the second and third appear — without the first person, there is no second, no third.

Word for word

Whatever it is that rises in this body as "I", that itself is the mind. If one enquires in what place in the body the thought "I" first appears, it will be found to be in the Heart. That is the birthplace of the mind. Even if one merely keeps thinking "I, I", it will take one to that very place and leave one there. Of all the thoughts that appear in the mind, the thought "I" is the first thought. Only after this has arisen do the other thoughts arise. Only after the first person appears do the second and third persons appear. Without the first person, there are no second and third persons.
