Paragraph 10
In plain words
Like prāṇāyāma, meditating on a form, repeating a mantra and regulating what you eat are also aids for restraining the mind. Meditation on a form and repetition of a mantra bring the mind to one point. An elephant's trunk is always swinging. Give it a chain to hold, and the elephant walks along holding that chain and grasping nothing else. In the same way the mind, always restless, will hold to one name or form if you train it on that. Because the mind spreads out into countless thoughts, each single thought becomes very weak. As the thoughts subside, one by one, the mind becomes one-pointed, and a mind that has gained strength this way finds self-enquiry easy. Of all rules, the best is a rule of moderate, sattvic food. It increases the mind's sattva, and that helps self-enquiry.
Word for word
Like prāṇāyāma, meditation on a [divine] form, repetition of a mantra, and regulation of food are also aids that restrain the mind. Through meditation on a form and through mantra-repetition the mind attains one-pointedness. Just as, if one gives a chain into the trunk of an elephant that is forever swaying, that elephant will walk along holding that alone and grasping nothing else, so too the ever-restless mind, if one trains it on some one name or form, will hold on to that alone. Since the mind spreads out into countless thoughts, each thought becomes extremely weak. As thoughts subside and subside, the mind attains one-pointedness, and for a mind that has gained strength by this, self-enquiry will be accomplished easily. By the rule of moderate, sattvic food, the best of all rules, the sattva quality of the mind increases, and self-enquiry is helped.
