Question and answer 9
In plain words
How can it be that the Heart is nothing but Brahman?
In waking, dream and deep sleep the Self takes its experiences by way of the seats of the eye, the throat and the Heart, yet it never leaves its own chief seat, the Heart. In the middle of the Heart-lotus, which is the self of all, that is, in the space of the mind, that light of the Self called 'I' shines. Because it shines in this way in every body, it is called the witness, and turīya, the fourth. Within that 'I'-light, and shining in every body free of the 'I', is the supreme Brahman, the space of the Self (the space of knowledge): that is the real thing. This is turīyātīta, beyond the fourth. That is why the Heart is said to be nothing other than Brahman. And because Brahman shines as the Self in the hearts of all living beings, Brahman also has the name 'Heart' (hṛdaya): split the word as hṛt + ayam, and its meaning comes out as Brahman itself. That Brahman, shining as the Self, lives in the seat of the Heart in every living being has a proof that is enough for anyone: everyone says 'I, I' and points to their own chest.
Word for word
How is it that the Heart is nothing other than Brahman?
Although the Self, in waking, dream and deep sleep, enjoys experience by way of seats such as the eye, the throat and the Heart, it never actually departs from its own principal seat, the Heart. In the middle of the all-pervading Heart-lotus, that is, in the space of the mind, that Self-light called 'I' shines. Because it shines thus in every body, this is called the witness and the turīya. The real thing is that space of the Self (the space of knowledge) — the Supreme Brahman that shines within that 'I'-light, free of 'I', the same in every body. This is turīyātīta. Therefore it is said that the Heart is nothing other than Brahman. Moreover, it is precisely because Brahman shines as the nature of the Self in the hearts of all living beings that Brahman also bears the name 'Heart' (hṛdaya). By the division hṛt + ayam ('this is the heart'), the meaning of the word hṛdaya turns out to be Brahman itself. And that everyone, without exception, touches their chest and says 'I, I' is sufficient proof that the reality of Brahman, shining as the nature of the Self, dwells in the seat of the Heart in every living being.
