Now the restraint that Pratardana practised, which they also call the inner fire offering. So long as a man speaks he cannot breathe; then he offers the breath in speech. So long as a man breathes he cannot speak; then he offers speech in the breath. These two are the endless, deathless offering, which he offers continually and without break, waking and sleeping. But all other offerings have an end, for they are made of works. And knowing this, the men of old did not offer the fire offering.
