In plain words
This path to liberation did not begin now. When, then? Earlier too —
'Free from attachment, fear, and anger' — these have simply left them, and that is what makes them free of them. Wholly given to me, knowers of Brahman, seeing no difference between themselves and the Lord, relying on me and me alone, the Supreme Lord — they stand in knowledge, and only knowledge. Many such people, purified by the austerity of knowledge — knowledge itself, aimed at the supreme Self, is the real austerity — purified by that, having reached the highest purity, arrive fully at my own state of being: the state of the Lord, liberation. And the phrase 'by the austerity of knowledge' is exactly what marks this out as the discipline of knowledge alone, needing no other austerity at all.
Close to the Sanskrit
This path of liberation has not come forth now; what then? Earlier also —
Free from attachment, fear, and anger: attachment, fear, and anger are gone — departed — from whom, they are 'free from attachment, fear, and anger'; wholly given over to me, knowers of Brahman, seers of non-difference from the Lord, relying on me alone, the Supreme Lord, established exclusively in knowledge — this is the meaning. Many, numerous, purified by the austerity of knowledge — knowledge itself, having the Supreme Self as its object, is austerity — purified by that austerity of knowledge, having attained the highest purity, have arrived at, fully attained, my state of being, the state of the Lord, liberation. The indicator of this — the discipline of knowledge independent of other austerities — is the qualifying phrase 'by the austerity of knowledge.'
Gītā Vāhini
In plain words
“Arjuna! Those who are free of rāga and dveṣa, fear and anger; those absorbed in thought of Me, in My name and form alone; those who know no refuge but Me; those made pure by Ātmajñāna; those who know My divine births and karmas and seek Me alone with Satya, Dharma and Prema: they attain Me alone. This is true three times over. Give up your doubt. Men who are ajñānis constantly make their antaḥkaraṇas impure by dwelling on sense objects. Such people come to think only of sense objects, sound and the rest; as soon as the vāsanās of those objects touch them, desires arise to get them. When the desires so wished for are not fulfilled, or when the objects come into their hands and slip away again, they fall prey to unrest and are seized by fear and delusion. Fear devours all a man's powers. In one who is fearful, anger runs high. Anger and fear: these two are the terrible obstacles to attaining God. Only when these three, desire, anger and fear, are wholly removed from the antaḥkaraṇa do they remain never to be parted from God. Brother-in-law! Consider these matters well, and inquire into them. As one who has Viveka, put your faith in My words,” the Lord said.
