In plain words
It is not possible to discover for how many births man has been making this journey called humanness. Even so, without giving the least thought to the aim of the goal, without trying to know for himself the sacredness called humanness, he longs to live on in this world for however long it may be: that is a most astonishing thing. Today in the world the means of rest are growing in abundance, but we do not set about developing the means of Śānti with any effort. For the man without Śānti, even when he gets rest, it is nothing but great unrest in his eyes. Though he works twenty-four hours, the jñāni passes his life in Śānti itself. Though he has no work at all, the ajñāni has nothing but unrest, always. Yet, making no effort to find the place where Śānti dwells, we are setting out on a journey even to the moon, saying there is no Śānti on this earth. But will Śānti be found even on the moon? That finding we shall talk about later. What came of spending thirty-five crore dollars and going to the moon is this: coolness for the body alone, while in his mind he leads his life with fear and confusion. So for us, gaining Śānti on earth, or in heaven, or on the moon, or in Indra's world, is a falsehood. Then where is Śānti? Śānti is in the seat of the heart, one's own inner part, and there alone. It is not in the outer part. If we set about winning it outside with effort, we become nothing but people who have wasted their time. When the person who wants to experience Śānti purifies his feeling in his inner sight, we become fit, in some measure, for sacred Śānti. This is like the saying, ‘The name is grand, the village a rubbish heap.’ That is, the name is grand: ‘We are going to the moon’; but the result we have gained by it is nothing. If all these crores of dollars were spent on this earth, how many beings would have the chance to find Śānti and happiness!
