Passage 10

In plain words

So here all are workers! But if there is no one to carry out certain rules, our work does not get done. Each one must do the work that fits his place. All are servants! It does not mean here that all are the same. A small example of this. There is a doctor. There is a nurse, and a compounder too. This nurse, compounder and doctor: all three are workers! But the doctor takes the knife and cuts open the belly. The nurse hands the patient whatever is to be handed at each moment. What does the compounder do? He does the cleaning and the like, doing his own work. What all three do is work! But if the nurse, saying that all are workers, goes and tries to cut open the belly, the patient will not live. In the same way there is a State President. There is a District Convenor. There is a State Convenor. All of these are workers! But each, within his own place, must do only those things he has to give orders for. Keeping one aim, each must do his own work. We must do our own work. Whatever work is to be got done, to be there in person at that work and get it done with them: that is your duty. There is the State President. It is not that, thinking ‘I am the State President, after all’, he simply gives orders and sits at home. He must supervise. That is his duty; he need not bend his back and work in the Seva Dal. He must get the work done. That is duty; this responsibility rests on him. In that way all are workers! Now look. I too am a worker! I come at seven in the morning. I make a survey of everything. That is my work. I go on working all the time! You must do your own work. This is ideal work. It is not that all must come together and do the same work; each must do the work that fits his own level. It will not do for some Seva Dal member to go against this and say, ‘You bend down and work’, because Sai Baba has said all are workers. That is not good. We must go on giving to each person whatever respect is due to him, whenever and wherever it is due. That is our duty. We must go on giving respect well to one another. Because that respect is the feeling of God who is in all! The State President must give respect to the Seva Dal.
