In plain words
Into a head with nothing in it one can put anything; can a head already full of all sorts of things be filled? Unless the skull is empty, can it be filled with good deeds here?
If we want to fill this tumbler with milk, only when we empty out the water in it can we fill it with milk. Only when we put away the bad feelings in us can we fill it with good feelings. Only when we make sacrifice can we receive joy.
Sacrifice is very important for a student. Today, only when students enter into such sacrifice will they become powerful enough to change the whole world into a world of yoga. Students! We must not hanker in the least simply for worldly desires and for physical pleasures and riches. There must be desires to do with the world, but there must be a limit to everything. As Swami Satchidananda said, even if nothing else is in our view, we must keep death in view. Whatever journey we make or do not make, whether we postpone it or not, whether we cancel it or not, the final journey, though, we can neither postpone nor cancel. He stays here some two or three months, and then he goes back to his parents. This is a temporary death. But there is a permanent death. This is a small sleep. That is the big sleep. Without these two there is no happiness at all for man. One can live without eating, but without sleep one falls ill. So we must constantly try to recognise what is called Satya.
We say Śānti, Śānti. Where do we find Śānti? However many mansions we build, we do not find Śānti. However much money we earn, we do not find Śānti. The story of Midas is a good proof of this. Our longings too must have some limit. If they go beyond the limit, even money loses its worth. Cleverness too must have a limit. Because we are clever, we must not try to look into everything. We must do what is needed, where, when and in the way it is needed. We must not long for anything beyond limit. Excessive desire is the loss of reason. Measured desire is great ease. So we students must set about living a measured life, a wholesome life. We must always reflect on what the atmosphere here is and for what purpose we have come here. Since we have entered such an atmosphere, we must try to behave in keeping with it.
Students! We did not found these institutions hoping for any return of any kind. We founded these institutions to show the ideal of true students to this world, which today is weighed down with misconduct, wrongdoing and injustice.
