Passage 6

In plain words

The science of today does man twice as much harm as the help it does. Man's Viveka lies in the way he uses it. Knowledge without Viveka, scholarship without judgement, music without sweetness, friendship without gratitude, and society without faith do not win the respect of people. That is why man must gain knowledge joined with Viveka. Today we are acquiring knowledge, but in the way we use it we are reducing Viveka to nothing. Knowledge without Viveka is useless. That is why we must develop knowledge along with Viveka, judgement along with knowledge, the contentment of society along with judgement, and humility and obedience along with the contentment of society.

Learning gives humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness wealth, from wealth Dharma; from that a man gains this world and the next.

Our desires are reaching to the sky. Only on the day we reduce these desires to some extent will humanness become manifest, blossom and shine. The proper study of mankind is man. The humanness of today is this: one thing in the mind, another in the words, yet another in the deeds. This is not true humanness. This is monkey nature. Only when we practise well what is in the mind in the word, and what is in the word in the deed, does this take shape as true humanness. Merely gaining degrees is not what matters. The man of today has gained knowledge in many ways. In technology he has framed many theories. In the science of matter he has learnt many things. By research he has gone on recognising truths of many kinds. But how far has he recognised the value in humanness? How many good qualities is he making manifest?
