In plain words
From time without beginning many maharṣis and men of the śāstras have gone on carrying out researches of many kinds into this problem that cannot be untangled. But since they had no authority at all either to say that it exists or to say that it does not, they went on taking up their researches, each his own, step by step. Yet some who had self-confidence took a firm vow and, with the resolve to achieve it somehow, entered upon the research, dedicating their time, their bodies and even their actions in many ways. Some who were pure of heart, knowers of the holy Ātma, gave up food and drink and, with no desires of any kind, held to only one vow: the search for God. To that, as it is called, they dedicated their lives and offered them up. ‘Śraddhāvān labhate jñānam.’ The śraddhā of those who had taken up so holy and so hard a vow turned into Jñāna. All at once the maharṣis set aside that kind of vow, came out into the world and undertook to teach. ‘O people! We have seen God. We have experienced that Ānanda. You too, see Him. You too, experience this Ānanda. Increase this Ānanda again. Share out again with all around you the Ānanda you have increased. This alone is man's duty. This alone is the highest goal of our life.’ That is what they declared: ‘Vedāhametaṃ puruṣaṃ mahāntaṃ ādityavarṇaṃ tamasaḥ parastāt.’ Where did you see God? Not somewhere, in some place. Not in some place outside. We saw Him in our own body. Beyond this tamas He shines with a resplendent radiance. When we root out this tamas, it shines out full of radiance.
You take the mind as your support and follow the mind. That is why you do not see God.
The man who takes the mind for his support falls lower than a beast and is ruined; the man who takes the Buddhi for his support becomes Paśupati …
So it was said. So we must take the Buddhi, the power of enquiry, as our support and try to see God, who is the very form of the principle of Jñāna. Then the ṛṣis said this. The human body is no ordinary thing. It is the dwelling place of God, the centre of His sport. It is His playground. In the heart of such a man God shines, ever radiant, resplendent.
