Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He who falls under the sway of the senses becomes a slave.

Students! It is because the system of education has taken many wrong turns that students' feelings too have taken such wrong turns; the students of today are not wicked. They have pure hearts. They have selfless hearts. At home the parents, in the school the teachers, are leading you down the wrong path. It is natural for parents to have love. But even that love must not be love beyond bounds. How are the children growing up? What kind of behaviour are they in? Parents must keep a close watch on this. Today the parents themselves do not have that kind of behaviour. What, then, can they tell their children? We must not give too much freedom. How far should there be freedom?

The end of wisdom is freedom The end of culture is perfection The end of knowledge is Love The end of education is character.

There must be freedom of this kind. Not this: letting them go freely, and when the children come home at twelve at night or at one, the parents cannot question them at all; how they are ruining their children! In students today there are no manners, no behaviour, no discipline at all. This is not the children's fault. It is the parents' bad ideal. This love leads them down so many wrong paths. So the parents too are partly responsible for this. Only then will the children's future take shape as a good, ideal life.

Students! You must become educated, go out into the world with a good ideal, and develop your ideal in every field. You need not study merely for the sake of a degree. We must do it only for the contentment of our own hearts.

Do not go after degrees in learning; do not shrink from the calling of service; you must render the plain services of the world.
