In plain words
Some time later, that went on changing into ‘Good bye, Good bye’. At long last the Good dropped out of it, and it became merely ‘bye, bye’. This is the change that has come about by today. What great value the word God-boy had in those days! Has the word bye, bye any value today? In this way the system of education is sinking into ruin.
Teachers! We must teach our children about the 3 Ps. What are these 3 Ps? 1. purity, 2. patience, 3. perseverance. Purity, forbearance, steadfastness. When these three are given to boys and girls, they will be able to protect this country. Today what protects a country is not guns, not politics, not bombs, nor anything else. You need not trouble to join the military and take up a gun to protect the country. What you must protect is not the country: you must protect Satya and Dharma. If you protect Satya and Dharma, they will protect the country. Satya is God. For the people of every country and of every religion, Satya is one, only one. There is no such thing as ‘This is American Satya, this is British Satya, this is Indian Satya…’. Satya is one for all. We must protect it. And Dharma is nothing separate from it. And Dharma is nothing separate from it. ‘Satyānnāsti paro dharmaḥ’: the mansion of Dharma stands on the foundation of Satya. So if we guard these two, our dwelling will stay safe and sound.
We must show today's children the way to faith in spirituality. Today faith itself has gone. Only when there is faith does Prema arise in us. Only when you believe ‘She is my mother’ do you feel Prema for her. That is why:
Where there is faith, there is Prema; where there is Prema, there is Śānti; where there is Śānti, there is Satya; where there is Satya, there is Ānanda; where there is Ānanda, there is God.
First of all, Self-confidence must be the foundation; Self-satisfaction must be the walls. Self-sacrifice must be the roof; Self-realisation must be the life. Only then does it become complete humanness.
Teachers! It is not enough that you merely teach. Call the parents too and arrange a meeting with them: “How is the boy at home? How does he behave?” You must find out these things too. Many teachers work in village areas. Getting the children there to sing bhajans, telling them stories, teaching them ślokas: this much alone is of no use. Health is the greatest wealth, so teach them well about health. In some small villages the drinking water has too much fluoride. Because of it, teeth decay and bones break. But children who do not know this drink such water and fall ill. So you must teach those children about the water they drink, the food they eat, the cleanliness of their surroundings and the like. When the stomach is burning, how will learning get into the head? Food, head, God: you must make these three one. Only then will boys and girls grow into exemplary citizens.
In the three days to come, whatever problems each of you meets in whatever field, gather in small groups among yourselves and find fitting ways to solve them. You must give up selfishness and welcome the good of others. Whatever comes, you must face it with courage.
