In plain words
The students who sing these bhajans made a great effort, and through sādhanas of many kinds they are able today to sing in tune. Durvāsa was rich in great power. He was rich in great tapas, but you would not find śama in him even if you searched with a telescope. He had a fierce temper. Śānti was not to be seen in him. So no fame or honour at all attached to his name. The reason was simply that he had no Śānti. However much tapas a man does, however much power he earns, without Śānti he himself loses everything. Along with Śānti, forbearance is essential.
Forbearance is Satya, forbearance is Dharma, forbearance is the Veda! forbearance is Ahiṃsā; forbearance is joy, forbearance is compassion, forbearance is everything in all the worlds.
Forbearance is the chief eye of every man. For sādhanas of every kind, Prema is the chief life-breath. Without this Prema there is no life at all. You must try to recognise this principle of Prema well and to live by it.
Life is a dream, realise it. What is dream? Life, all of it, is dream. In the daytime you are all sitting here and listening to Swami's message. Is this not a dream! With your eyes you see. With your ears you hear. You are letting your heart be moved. You feel that these changes and combinations are direct proof. How far is this direct proof? After you lie down at night, all that was direct becomes indirect. In that dream both joy and sorrow keep happening. But how long do the sorrows and the joys last? Only as long as the dream lasts. The moment you come back to the waking state, all of it turns into Asatya. So in the daytime there are no night dreams. In sleep at night these daytime experiences do not come to mind at all. So this is a day dream, that is a night dream. In this day dream there is no night dream. In the night dream there is no day dream. But you are there in the day dream and in the night dream too. So you are omnipresent. When night and day are both dreams, life is a dream. So you must realise it. That is religion. Religion means realisation. To recognise what Satya is: that is religion. For everything, Prema alone is the chief thing. In harsh forests, in wild jungles where fierce beasts roamed, many ṛṣis spent their time doing tapas. Fierce beasts of many kinds were roaming there. But the ṛṣis had no guns, no knives, no other weapons. Yet these ṛṣis and those beasts went on living as equals, in the forest.
