Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What service are we doing for society in return for receiving so many sacred good qualities? What kind of return are we giving to society? When people question themselves in this way, no answer comes at all. This itself is the great fault. We must show gratitude to every human being. To show that gratitude, we must do selfless service in society. That selfless service is the chief service given to this society. For this very reason we began what is called service to society. But today service to society is seen nowhere. Through this service people gain name and fame, but they do not live out their own dedication at all. The body came into being to be dedicated to society. The reason? This humanness is nourished by this society itself. This body, so nourished, must do society proper service through good qualities. We must recognise the welfare of society. Today, wherever you look, in positions, in authority, in business, in politics, in rulers, sacrifice is not seen at all. In every field a severe pollution has set in. We must make the effort it takes to wipe away this dirt. Officials, parents, men of intellect, the educated and teachers are filled completely with this kind of pollution. They are proud of being great men of intellect, but the humility and obedience that should be in a man of intellect are not seen. He is proud of being a highly educated man, but the sacrifice that belongs to learning is not seen in him. He is proud: ‘I am a great officer’; but the conduct that belongs to an officer is not seen at all.

Forbearance alone is everything

In everything there must be both fear of sin and love of God. When one loves God, one becomes one who loves the world itself. Whoever punishes us, whoever harms us, we must accept it with patience. The whole world must become one family. The whole world is one home. Every human being in it is a brother. brotherhood of man, fatherhood of god. One must experience for oneself the oneness that says all is oneself. When we recognise this oneness, we do not try to hurt others. One's own hard teeth bite one's own soft tongue. Do we punish the teeth because they bit the tongue? We do not. The tongue is mine, the teeth are mine. In the same way, even if others harm us, revile us or hurt us, we must try to forgive them. In these young men the quality of forbearance is most needed. At this age hot blood flows. Whatever anyone says, great anger comes. That is very wrong. This is not a quality man should have. We must try to master this calmly, with patience.

Forbearance is Satya, forbearance is Dharma, forbearance is the Veda, forbearance is Ahiṃsā; forbearance is contentment, forbearance is compassion, forbearance is everything in all the worlds.

Young women and young men must try to achieve this forbearance in practice. Practising such patience is itself true Dharma. We must set humanness on such a path, one that accords with Dharma.

Embodiments of Prema! You must try to recognise how many sacred qualities there are in humanness. The six inner foes, lust, anger, greed, pride and envy, are the marks of wild beasts, not the marks of man. They are not the marks that should be in humanness. One who frightens is a wild beast. One who is afraid is cattle. You are not a wild beast; you are not cattle. You must not frighten, and you must not be afraid. Rising above both of these, you must show humanness. Today's young women and young men must develop the chief qualities. Do not frighten anyone. Do not be afraid of anyone. What must one fear? One must fear sin. One must love God. One should love God and no other. Today in the world there is a mother's love. There is a father's love. There is a brother's love. There is the love of relatives. There is the love of friends. In this love there is some selfishness, more or less. But the love that has no selfishness at all is divine Prema alone! He asks nothing of you. God expects nothing from you. From foot to head He is selflessness itself! Perfect Prema itself! We must go on loving God alone, whose very form is Prema. When there is fear of sin, love of God begins. Society honours a man who has such love. Today, to gain honour in society, we must achieve divine Prema itself. To achieve divine Prema, we must develop the fear of sin. No sin at all should enter us.
