In plain words
Forbearance is Satya, forbearance is Dharma, forbearance is yoga, forbearance is Ahiṃsā, forbearance is yajña, forbearance is right conduct, forbearance is compassion; forbearance itself is the support of all.
In all the worlds there must be forbearance alone. We must bear that very forbearance. We must choose forbearance itself. That is why the one crown the yogīs wear upon their heads is forbearance itself. So attain Śānti. After he had said this, Lakṣmaṇa told Kausalyā all that had happened. Then Kausalyā, poor soul, collapsed. “Rāma! We cannot live even a moment without you. You have bowed your head to your father's command. I do not say no to that. But take me too with you,” she said. Then Rāma spoke. “For a wife, the husband himself is God. So it is not possible at all for you to leave your husband and come. Your husband himself is your all. So, as long as life lasts, you cannot leave him. Serve him; he is sinking in sorrow at my parting, so stay and keep teaching him the peace he needs,” he said.
At once Sītā came and spoke; she is no ordinary woman. She is the daughter of the great King Janaka. Vaidehī means one who has no delusion of the body at all; that is why they named her Vaidehī. Sītā burst out laughing. ‘Rāma! One teaching for me, and another teaching for your mother? When I said I would come with you, you told me I could not come. Your aged mother and father are here. “Serve them and live your life,” you said. When it comes to your mother, you say the husband himself is God. For me, then, are you yourself not God? One dharma for one woman. Another dharma for another woman? I will not agree to this,’ she said. Besides this, is it possible for Rāmacandra to be in the forest and Sītā in Ayodhyā? Wherever the moon is, the coolness of its light must be there too. So Sītā said, “Take me too.” Setting right such duties, Rāma, step by step, kept setting everything right: the reconciling of his mothers, the reconciling of his wife, all of it. This itself is the dharma of the family; one has to devise the fitting skill too.
