In plain words
Along with that, we must try to change and to shape the feeling of the Manas too, as far as we can, to fit it.
Next, the fifth, Ahiṃsā. What is Ahiṃsā? It is not just a matter of harming a living being. It is not just not harming a creature. It is not only not harming a creature physically. We must not hurt others even by words. We must not hurt others even by signs of the eye. Nor must we hurt them by deeds. To see that we hurt others in no other way either: that is Ahiṃsā. Patience itself is Ahiṃsā, they said. If we bear everything, there is no Ahiṃsā greater than this at all. We can hurt no one in any way. So we must develop the divine strength that belongs to Ahiṃsā. Only when we have this strength of patience can we make our life flourish to the full. Not only that. There must be forbearance too.
Forbearance is Satya, forbearance is Dharma, forbearance is the Veda, forbearance is Ahiṃsā, forbearance is yajña, forbearance is contentment, forbearance is compassion, forbearance is everything, for all the worlds.
We must reflect on how sacred this forbearance is. When we develop this forbearance, humility and obedience grow in our learning too. Through it our life becomes radiant. Life shines only when there is harmony and concord among its many spheres. To make the right effort to bring the ancient traditions and the culture, which shine in daily life as eternal Satya, into harmony with the needs of today: that itself is the aim of study. So we must not be content merely because we are studying and taking big degrees. Along with those degrees we must make the right effort to develop our humanness too. As much as we develop this humanness, so much will the country, the world and society develop. Today we are developing everything we want. In each department we are developing some new method. But are we coming to know our humanness? We are not. We increase our property and possessions. We build up the body. We increase our band of relatives. We increase our wealth. We increase our offspring. But nowhere do we make any effort to increase our humanness. If you ask where humanness grows, it grows only on a divine path, only on the spiritual path. It grows only in the principle of the Ātma. It is not something that grows anywhere else. A seed put in the soil and watered will grow, but put in a tin and watered, it will rot. In the same way, we must go on fostering this sacred humanness within a broad outlook. This itself is sacred learning. Sacred tapas. Sacred divinity. Hoping that you students will develop this divinity day by day, and through it, along with this learning, gain Viveka, and along with Viveka, experience; that you will place in society the divine feeling born of these two, experience and Viveka, use it for the welfare of the world, and find fulfilment; and that we make the right effort to restore the country and a divine society once again; and blessing you, I bring My long talk to a close.
