In plain words
For the body to roam about with no bond to the mind or the Ātma is animality. For the mind to act with no bond to the body or the Ātma is demonic nature. And for the Ātma to move freely with no bond to the body or the mind is divinity. Body, mind and Ātma: the blended form of these three is itself humanness. Only one who has goodness is a human being. This goodness is not something gained from studies; it is gained from human values alone. Values are for education, education for life, life for man, man for society, society for science, science for spirituality, spirituality for the nation, the nation for the world, the world for Śānti! Human values are the very foundation of Śānti and happiness. Where human values are missing altogether, man cannot attain Śānti.
Man today takes only the knowledge of things to be the goal of education. But this knowledge (information) cannot nourish humanness. It is turning man into a mere machine. It is turning man into a computer, but it is not turning him into a composer. Becoming a computer is no greatness; you must become a composer. Today the government sets up educational institutions in every village and every hamlet, and thinks that education in the country has made great progress (development).
‘It throws down the very one who fed it, jeers at the very one who taught it, does harm to the very one who did it good: this is ‘progress’ in the learning of today.’
‘All natures, eternal and true, are taking on a distorted form; sacred nature is leaving the people day after day; the noble learning of the Vedas has sunk low, and evil learning keeps on growing!’ Is this progress? No, no. The student must show forth a humanness joined with compassion and Dharma. He must study the learning that is true and eternal. He must pledge himself to rooting out Asatya. Going into village after village and teaching human values, he must make the effort it takes to bring the people onto the right path.
