Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

This itself they named a snātakotsava (convocation). This learning is most sacred. This itself is the form of God. That learning is in every one. I told you yesterday: where did the word education come from? It has a kind of inner meaning as well. It came from the word 'educare'. Educare means to bring out. Bringing out from where? Bringing out from our heart. What is drawn out from the head is pravṛtti education; what is drawn out from the heart is nivṛtti education. True education is what comes from the heart. None of these is the right kind of learning. This is external learning. The kinds of learning people acquire today come only from the head. But what comes from the heart is Prema, forbearance, sympathy, Satya, kindness, compassion: all of these. I will give two fine examples of this and stop.

Man Must Know Himself

There is a student. How can you say that you have fully recognised this student? If you give his height and weight, saying, ‘Six feet tall, he is fair, his weight is 70 kgs,’ do you become one who has fully recognised him? Not this. In him there are so many qualities you do not know. Today science and technology are advancing so much. In the world, people think so highly of science and technology. Science and technology were discovered in Bhārata many thousands of years ago, by Hiraṇyakaśipu. Today the scientists have gone as far as the moon. Hiraṇyakaśipu of those days went as far as the Pole Star. The son of so great a scientist was a little student, Prahlāda. He told his father:

You conquered all the worlds in a moment; the host of the senses and the mind you cannot conquer. The six fierce foes that hold you bound, shatter them! Among all living beings is your enemy anyone else? Look with discernment, lord of the dānavas!
