Passage 1

In plain words

The more you rub a piece of sandalwood, the more it gives nothing but fragrance. The more you chew sugarcane, the more it gives nothing but sweet juice. The more you burn gold in the fire, the more brilliantly it shines. In the same way, however many hardships befall him, a good man lives out his life supremely calm and joyful, with a noble mind. Holding on to goodness even in hardship and loss is what true humanness is.

Embodiments of Prema! The sun is spreading light over the whole world. In that light many people perform many kinds of actions. They go through many sorrows and joys. But however many actions anyone performs, whatever sorrows and joys anyone goes through, the sun has nothing whatever to do with them. In the same way, the sorrows and joys man goes through belong only to body, senses, mind and Buddhi; the consciousness of the Ātma has nothing whatever to do with them.

In this world many people say that they are searching for God. But the One who is everywhere is God alone. Why go looking for such a God? So the devotee need not search for God. God Himself is searching for the true devotee. When you touch a hot iron ball with your hand, you say, “My hand got burnt.” But what burnt it was not the ball; it was the fire hidden in the ball that burnt your hand. In the same way, this world is like a huge iron ball. Within it and without, everywhere, nothing but divine power pervades it. But unable to recognise that power, you keep thinking that this world is bringing you many sorrows and joys. Yet the cause of the sorrows and joys you go through is not this world. It is merely an ‘iron ball’, nothing more. The reflections called sorrow and joy that come from it are nothing but the workings of the consciousness of the Ātma. So, whatever happens, you must regard it as nothing but the reflection of the Ātma, the radiance of the Ātma, the working of the Ātma, the gift of the Ātma.
