In plain words
Embodiments of Prema! Bhakti does not mean setting up some picture of God and doing pūjā. You may regard pūjās, vratas and all such things merely as good deeds. Above all, you must foster good feelings. Doing good deeds without good feelings is of no use. You sang bhajans all night; you sang them with great joy. But along with the joy of hearing, the joy of the heart too must come in. What use is it if outwardly you do positive work while inside you fill yourself with negative feelings? First of all you must push out the negative feelings and fill yourself with positive feelings. Only then will you come right; your home will come right. The whole world will come right.
Today many educated people, unable to find suitable jobs, are in great distress. They heap blame on the government, saying it is not giving them jobs. How many people can the government, for its part, give jobs to? Not only this. Employees too are pressing the government to raise their salaries. In our educational institutions there are no fees, but in institutions outside, whenever the fees are raised, the students go on strike; and if we look at the teachers, they too keep pressing the government to raise their salaries. Where, for its part, can the government bring all this money from? It gives the people only what it has gathered from the people, does it not! So if it lays taxes on the people, they blame the government, saying it is oppressing the people. If it does not lay taxes, it cannot raise the employees' salaries or lower the students' fees. So you must understand the government's decisions with a broad mind. Pressing the government and blaming the government are very wrong. We must blame no one.
Embodiments of Prema! Wash your heart clean, fill it with sacred feelings, and do good deeds. Fill your heart with the Name of God; do service with your hands. “Dil me Rām, hāth me kām”: this is the right path. Then God Himself will help you. There are flowers, a needle and thread. Will the garland make itself? There must be someone to string it, surely! There are the lamp, the oil and the wick. Will the light of the lamp arise? There must be someone to light it, surely! In just the same way, there must be a master to set the body, the mind, the Buddhi and the citta to work, surely!
