Passage 5

In plain words

However many vessels you set out, the sun appears in that many forms. Though the vessels differ, the water is one and the same. But if there is no water at all in the vessels, the sun's reflection will not appear in them. The human body is like a vessel. Only when the water called the mind within it is pure will God's reflection appear clearly. If there are bad feelings in the mind, everything looks only bad. If there are good feelings, good alone is seen everywhere. The cause of good and bad is the feelings within you, not influences from outside. Pain or joy, they have sprung from you; they are not given to you from outside. The body is a bubble on water. The mind is a mad monkey. So do not trust either the body or the mind. Both of these have come from you yourselves! So you must trust yourselves.

The lack of the feeling of the one Ātma is the root of all suffering

Students! If you trust yourselves, no sorrows or hardships of any kind will come before you. At least believe the things your elders have told you, and follow them. Keep the feelings within you pure, and put them into practice. If a bad feeling arises in you, the result too will be of the same kind. That evil has not come from society or from others. Good and bad have come from you yourselves; you must not think that they came from someone and entered into you. When we eat a mango, a mango belch comes up; a cucumber belch does not, does it! In the same way, your joys and sorrows are born in you yourselves; they have not come from outside and entered into you. Do not worry in the least about what is in the outside world. You must follow the feeling of Satya that springs from you. All the good and bad that man experiences are ‘reflection’, ‘reaction’ and ‘resound’, springing from his own inner feeling! The influence of these three ties man in knots and confounds him in many ways. Forgetting these three, he tries to discover something new.
