Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

I will give life. But you go first and teach him to purify his body and mind,’ He said. After Mārkaṇḍeya had done so, Pārvatī lifted the boy and seated him beside her. That is, what this shows is that the principle of purity wins a place close to the Paramātma. Īśvara blessed him: ‘My son! Live forever and flourish.’ Meanwhile the boy's parents came there to see what had become of their son. Seeing their son still alive: ‘My son! Through your Bhakti and surrender alone you have become immortal. Nothing need be given to God. A pure body, sacred words, a spotless gaze, selfless conduct: when these are good, God is surely won over. My son! You have saved yourself; nothing of it was in our power,’ they said. So, when body, mind and speech are pure, they themselves keep drawing God to them. So, if we want to win God over, the worship and rituals we perform are not what matters.

Every single thing I say comes from experience

Now and then I recite a padyam. I used to do exactly so.

As soon as the cock crows ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’, get up from your bed as you should; clean your teeth, ease the body's needs, bathe, put on your clothes and eat your caldi; wholesome food, chewed thoroughly and eaten in measure, will do you good; go to school, learn your lessons with care and be known as a humble boy; never go roaming about in the damp, never go near the dirty pits; running, kabaddi and games of ball keep up at the proper hours; if you heed the ways set out above, you will enjoy the good fortune of health.
