Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

However slight the wishes someone asks for, Swami shapes them into immense ones. After politics came, they made no provision for any village. I had current brought to the village. People kept thinking, ‘In Puttaparthi there are lamps with so much light.’ Such jealousies kept growing. So that they too should have no jealousy, I had it supplied to all the villages. I had it brought so that these bad qualities should not be in them. I did not act as I pleased; I kept learning what others wished and satisfying them. Look: when so many people sit in so big a hall, who has done this? Is it for Me? ‘Doing good to others is merit; harming others is sin’: this is important for everyone. Help ever, hurt never. You must keep on helping everyone. But you must not do it for your own selfish ends. We must never be selfish. Fish is better than selfish. Today, wherever you look, there is selfishness. Wherever these politics came from, wickedness has kept creeping over the whole world. So, if these politics were not there, everyone would be happy. Now all the small people are setting out. Even the man with a beedi shop is going into politics. We must recognise what politics means and act by it. No one is recognising it. ‘I am the finance minister,’ he said. What does ‘finance’ mean? He does not even know the meaning. They go about with the arrogance, ‘Whoever wants anything must come to me.’ So even fools who know nothing are going into politics. All those who do good are doing them harm. So do not join politics, any of you. Rely on your own strength. Going from house to house for votes, you are becoming small. Depend on God. When you depend on God, He Himself turns the minds of all. God is everything. So depend on God. Only then will you attain victory. You must not wish for anything for yourselves. If there is selfishness, you cannot help. The feeling of doing good to many must arise in you. So good qualities must come to you. You must do service full of sacrifice. That is why the Gītā said, ‘To action alone is your right, never to its fruits.’ Whatever you need, make the effort yourselves. Take good care of your family, who depend on you alone. I am not speaking to describe this one or that one. Progress on your own. If your family is to make good progress, you must beseech God. Wherever you look, God is there.
