Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must enter places that foster good words, good songs and good games. The work you do must be work that uplifts mankind. Whoever you speak with, you must speak calmly, with Prema, with compassion. Harsh words wound the heart. With good words we must melt the heart of the one before us. When any elder comes to our house, ‘Please come in. Sit down,’ we must say, and welcome him with Prema. ‘Help ever, hurt never.’ We must be a help to all. We must be friendly with all. These are the good words the Veda taught first of all:

May He protect us both together; may He nourish us both together; may we work together with vigour; may our study be full of light; may we never hate each other. Let us grow up together in harmony, let us go about together in harmony, let us nourish together in harmony the wisdom we have come to know, let us live together in harmony, without discord, in friendship.

The tongue is very soft. From such a tongue only sweet words should come, and harsh words should never come at all. If we hurt the one before us with harsh words, we too will have to suffer for it in the future. Since God has given you a tongue, you must put it to good use by speaking holy words. Whether you are good or bad rests on the words you speak. If you speak good words, you will be given a good place in society. Those who answer you will also answer well.

Children! Do not be proud that you are pursuing great studies. If pride enters you while you are a student, it will not leave you to the end of your life. First of all, make your heart pure, soft and sweet. When your heart is soft and sweet, the resolves that arise in you will be sweet too. Live your life with Prema, with pity and with compassion towards your fellow man. Your whole life must turn into Prema.
