Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In the first days after the wedding, husband and wife look on each other with great love, feeling, “You are I, and I am you.” After that it is as though “I am I, and you are you.” A week after the wedding, as husband and wife walk along through the bazaar, if the husband sees a thorn on the road he cries, “Thorn, thorn, thorn!”, takes her hand and pulls her aside. That is how much love there is! Another week later, as the two walk together through the bazaar again and he sees another thorn, he warns her, “There is a thorn there; watch out.” Some days after that, if he sees a thorn on the way again: “Can't you see with your eyes? There is a thorn there!” he says angrily. In this way the love of the body changes within a few days. If we trust in this love and live within it alone, how long can we stay happy? Such love of the body is not Prema. These two bodies, too, are only like bubbles on water. Who knows when that one will burst! Who knows when this one will burst! In that one there is only air, and in this one there is only air. This air goes off and joins the air. So for us it is not love of the body but the Prema of the heart that matters. This Prema reaches God directly.

The special worth of singing bhajans together

So many people are singing bhajans now. Are they all singing with Bhakti and śraddhā? Will all of them attain Mukti? No, no. But when so many gather in one place and sing bhajans, the prayers of at least some of them will reach God, the Prema of at least some of them will reach Him: it is in that hope, and to make the Prema of all together grow, that we sing bhajans. It was Guru Nānak who began the singing of bhajans together. “So many people are singing bhajans. Is God listening to this?” someone asked, and he answered, “Among so many, the Prema of any one or two reaches God. The Prema of those one or two is enough; it will protect everyone.” That is why we must sing bhajans together. Only when the one joins the whole does the one gain the strength it needs.
