In plain words
Each goes on bearing his own hardships. No one understands the plight of the poor. Even the countries that are called great do harm of so many kinds to other countries. And they do not even feel remorse for it. How hard those poor people toil, how much they suffer, they do not see at all. In all countries there are poor and rich. But help comes only to the rich; the poor get no help of any kind. First of all we must protect the poor. Every devotee must have both Prema and compassion. Divine Ānanda comes only to one who has the quality of sacrifice. One who lives with the narrow feeling of ‘I, mine’ will not receive God's help at any time, on any day.
Where there is the narrow feeling of ‘I’, Ahaṅkāra comes and settles. With those who think ‘mine, my people’, attachment comes and settles. When attachment joins it, a man's Ahaṅkāra grows still greater. In this vast world, whoever swells with pride in the narrow feeling of ‘I, mine’ cannot escape hardships. What is the cause of all this? Today everyone studies material learning alone. Under the sway of material learning, man thinks only of his own self-interest and not of the comfort of others. We must love everyone. Today all the great people of the world have lost both fear of sin and love of God. Day by day selfishness and self-interest keep growing, and breadth of heart keeps shrinking. We must give up selfishness. As far as we can, we must use our strength for the poor. If the poor did not toil and work, no one would get food of any kind, isn't that so!
“When they plough the land, sow the seeds and raise the crops, and these, without coming down even the steps of their mansions, sit and gulp it down: the rice is these men's, the gruel is theirs! This is the earth God gave; whose father's property is it? How did these come by rights those others do not have? If they fall upon them, saying ‘We are the strong’, is there no God at all?”
