All of this you have said is so, and even so my self is not content. Therefore I ask you about its root, which is unmanifest and whose understanding has no floor to it: you who were born of the Self-born and are of his very being. For you know every secret, having served that ancient Person, lord of the higher and the lower, who by mind alone sends forth the universe and guards it and takes it back, himself unattached among the strands. You go about the three worlds like the sun, and move within like the wind, a witness of the self. I have bathed, as duty required and by my vows, in Brahman higher and lower: look, then, and tell me plainly what is wanting in me.

The spotless fame of the Bhagavan you have left all but unsung. I hold that seeing to be defective by which he himself would not be pleased. Best of sages, you have sung out dharma and the other aims of life; the greatness of Vasudeva you have not so sung.
