I asked for husks· Verses 32–36

My mind was spoiled by the gods, who could not bear me and are themselves falling. Worst of the bad, I would not take hold of Narada's word, and it was true. Leaning on the god's maya, my sight broken in two like a man asleep, I burned with a heart-sickness over a brother turned rival, over a second thing that is not even there. What I asked for was wasted, like medicine given after the life is gone. I pleased by austerity the self of the world, who is hard to please, and then I asked the one who cuts birth off for birth itself, luckless man. He was handing me his own kingdom, and in my folly I begged the Lord for standing, as a poor man whose merit is spent begs a king for husks.

Maitreya said: Dear one, people like you, who take the dust of Mukunda's lotus feet, want nothing for themselves except that service. Whatever comes of itself makes their minds rich.
