In that best of houses, built of masses of great jewels, cherished by his father past all measure, he lived as a god lives in heaven. There were beds like the froth of milk, of ivory under gold coverings, seats worth a great deal, and all the furnishings of gold. There, on walls of crystal and of great emerald, jewelled lamps shone, held up by women shaped out of gems. There were pleasant gardens with the many-coloured trees of the gods, pairs of birds calling in them, and bees drunk and singing, and ponds with steps of beryl, bearing lotuses and blue lilies and white, and busy with flocks of geese and ducks, with ruddy geese and cranes.

Uttanapada, the royal sage, heard of that power of his son and saw it, most wonderful as it was, and was struck with the greatest astonishment. Seeing that Dhruva had come of age, that his officers thought well of him and his people loved him, the king made him lord of the earth. And the lord of the people, reckoning himself well on in years, detached now, set out for the forest, turning over in his mind the way the self must go.
