So that best of heroes joined the self to the Self, became Brahman, and firmly laid his body down when the time came. Pressing the seat with his heels, driving the breath up slowly, holding it at the navel and in the hollows, at the heart, the chest, the throat and the head, and sending it further up, he settled it by stages in the crown; wanting nothing, he joined air to air, his body to earth, his heat to heat, the openings to space, the fluid to water, each in its own place and part by part: earth into water, water into heat, heat into air, air into space. The mind he set in the senses, and the senses in the subtle elements as they had come to be; and drawing these back into the first of the elements, he laid them in the great self.

That whole laying-out of the strands he set in the living one, who is made of maya; and the remainder that lodged within him, he in whom it lodged let go by the strength of knowledge and detachment, standing in his own form, being master.
